Your Freedom Guide

The balance and creativity that comes into play when we take advantage of everything we have inside of us is very powerful and Paul believes that anyone can learn to draw if they have the desire so that’s what my birthday special is going to be about In the meantime - enjoy the artwork.

Let us start with the first concept that language is needed for communicating ideas. In The Inner Game, the concept of Self 1 and Self 2 are introduced as two different parts of our psyche. The first one is the “self” that has the ability to perform a given task at our peak potential.

The other is the “self” that keeps telling us, why we can’t, what we should have done, what we should be doing, what we did “wrong” – and the list goes on. Moreover, it is talking to us DURING the performance.

I was relieved when I read The Inner Game of Music because I have had that secondary dialogue running in my head for so many years that I thought it was normal! As I looked back I wondered how I could perform ANYTHING with that other voice telling me how I should have released that last phrase…sung that note…added more character…and so on.

After I read the book, I began to connect with my “best performances” and see how that “other voice” never came into the equation. The goal is to be so “in the moment” that nothing else exists but the NOW. As a performer, if I am totally in the present, the things that matter are the energy/message in the music and the interaction between the audience and me.

Barry Green also introduces the trio concept of Awareness, Will and Trust. This trio is like playing pixie sticks. The sum of the parts is greater than any individual element.

Awareness is being in touch with everything around me. This includes how I am feeling, what is happening in the “house” (which is what allows me to open up and interact with my audience), and what the music is saying. Awareness even allows me to improvise and deliver a message that someone may have needed to hear – that I did not know of ahead of time. 

Trust, also known as removing all reason for doubt, comes in the form of trusting my own skills and preparation. I will perform better if I am able to trust the rest of the ensemble (if this is a group), the adequacy of the venue, and even the sound system, This list of “trust” is as long as the different elements that you have in your performance…even dress or costuming can be a factor.

Will provides the focus or clarity. Do I know what my goals and objectives are for any given performance? My goal may be as simple as everyone having a good time…or it may be eliciting a certain response. The clarity alone may be enough that I will hit my mark simply by being present or it may require some additional preparation. However, unless I have thought through what my desire is – I will have chosen to open myself up to the possibility of missing my mark.

With the combination of Awareness, Will and Trust, I also put myself in a position to know when to ask for feedback or help. Without this combination, I may find myself having the “if only” dialogue, 5 minutes before curtain. This self-talk diminishes any performance…from theater to business. I can change the order if needed, because they work best simultaneously, but I would not experience the same success should I remove an element.

If we just take the time to open up, open our eyes, open our hearts and our lives we find there are miracles in every moment.

I just happened to be talking to my Chiropractor Dr. Alan Dubin about belief and how the smallest doubt can affect the outcome of a situation, when he mentioned that he had just started reading a new book. Our conversation led to my watching a lecture by Dr. Bruce Lipton. Presented in 2000 during a lecture to colleagues this video – over 2.5 hours – was amazing to watch.

If you have not had the pleasure of acquainting yourself with any of the works by Dr. Lipton – I assure you – you are in for a treat. In The Biology of Belief Dr. Lipton goes extensively into how your thoughts affect your genes (and you life isn’t about hereditary cause and effect). His extensive historical documentation, in-depth cellular research and  ability to communicate the information so that even someone who didn’t particularly care for biology in school could grasp the wide reaching effects of what he was saying was impressive – to say the least.

Looking more closely at this statement McCain is saying that Republicans were victims of some kind of corrupt conspiracy. They had no choice. They had no say. By his continued inference that the members of congress residing in federal prisons are there NOT because of their own choices but because of some evil plan that involved “earmarking and pork-barrel spending” we must assume that Republicans cannot think for themselves.

It appears that while he also said, “We’ve got to start also holding people accountable…” he does not realize that the two go hand in hand. I cannot be held accountable if I have no choice in the matter.

The truth is I always have a choice. I may not LIKE the options but I do have a choice.

McCain talks about continuing the fight overseas to “win” and bring back our troops in victory. That bringing them back now would mean defeat. To him, maybe so. The question is, “Did they go over and do what was asked of them INDIVIDUALLY?” If yes – then each and every one of our military personnel were a success in his or her own right. They did what they believed was right and just. There is no winning in war. There is only a temporary stopgap in the violence.

Senator McCain went on to slam Senator Obama for his stand on meeting other foreign powers without precondition. With all due respect to his age and his history, Senator McCain is either too old or too afraid of responsibility to see that humanity will only achieve a state of real peace when we let go of the need to defend ourselves and “make someone out to be the bad guy”. Whether we agree or not, everyone has a reason for their actions. Telling them their wrong or that they can’t do something because we said so, won’t promote good will, understanding or peace.

Senator McCain’s choices to:

• Fall back on military force to keep the peace
• Do away with the corruption in government without accepting that everyone involved chose to be where they are
• To promise to take care of the veterans and make sure our military on active duty overseas get to come home with a “victory” to their credit

These choices all demonstrate a lack of understanding.

They demonstrate a lack of understanding that the basic truths are:

• Force will not and never has kept “peace”
• Accountability will only (really) be achieved when we learn to hold ourselves accountable and not hope for someone else to do it for us
• Respect for our veterans will be in place as long as the American nation (government, media and individual) support each other for acting in accordance with their beliefs and their intent was for the good of humanity

As a registered Republican and a USMC Veteran – I’m glad I have a choice and a voice in this country. I’m glad that millions of Americans still believe they can make a difference.

On September 21, 1981, the United Nations declared an International Day of Peace. In 2002, the General Assembly officially declared September 21 as the permanent date for this momentous occasion.

As a habit then, I believe that peace starts within, within our own hearts and souls. World peace will only be a reality when we find ourselves at peace individually. We can make this happen one moment at a time. I don’t know anyone that rides the Love Train 24/7 - 365 days a year, but we can begin the journey together and find ways to embrace the peace and love. 

One morning a few days ago, I woke with two tunes going through my head. One was a line from the song by John Lennon – “all we are saying is give peace a chance”. It repeated incessantly. It was overlaid by another tune and the following poem, which I wrote and share with you today –

I feel love in every day; I feel love in every way

I feel love deep in my heart, in every day there’s a brand new start.

I feel the peace flowing through my soul I feel the love that makes me whole

I feel peace I know I’m free I feel that peace deep inside of me

I feel peace of ages past; I feel that peace – I’m home at last

I feel the peace flowing through my soul I feel the love that makes me whole

I feel peace I know I’m free I feel that peace deep inside of me

I feel peace of ages past I feel that peace – I’m home at last 

I won’t kid you and say that I always feel this way. In fact, I’ve really begun to understand that the more I think I know, the further there is to go.

Nevertheless, it is a start and it is part of what allows me to know moments of total freedom. Something so ingrained that I know no one can take it from me. That if I “lose” it – it’s because I’ve chosen to give it up.

It is a beautiful afternoon and the sun is shining down while my two friends and I are playing in a garden close to the ocean. The flowers and marble pillars give a Greek or Roman feel to the setting.

After playing for some time, we go down to the shore along the ocean. A storm begins to brew and the water is rising quickly. We begin to run inland but there is a tidal wave coming up behind us. As I look back it seems that within the crest of the wave is a panther and it’s coming after us. As we continue to run, the wave grows in height and finally we yell to each other to run different ways. My friends are on either side of me and each runs off in a different direction as I continue to run forward.

Before much more time passes, an Angel appears off to my right just up ahead of me. She seems to be floating, maybe an inch or two off the ground. She keeps the same distance ahead of me of maybe 5 or 6 feet. After a few moments, she asks if I want to help my friends and stop this tidal wave.

“Of course”, I pant.

She smiled at me and said one word, “Stop”.

“Are you crazy?” I yelled at her. “I’ll be killed if I stop!”

She smiles and continues to pace me for a few more minutes. The conversation repeats itself with one exception - I’m yelling louder and a bit more panicked.

Again, I continue to run. Each time I turn to look at the wave, it seems to be the same distance behind me but the image of the cat is more vivid.

The third time she asks me if I want to save my friends, I simply said “yes” as that is about all the air I had left to utter a sound.

“Then stop running and stand still” she said. “You’re crazy,” I told her, “that wave and that cat will kill me if I stop.”

“If you really want to help them you must stop running.”

By this time, I don’t know if I’m too tired to be afraid or too afraid to care but I take a deep breath and stop running. Another breath and get into a fighting stance with my fists up - thinking that if I have to fight I might as well be ready.

“Now what?” I yelled at her.

She just smiles. It’s almost a Mona Lisa smile that she wears, all knowing and kind, not a mocking or superior smile. Then she says, “Get down on your knees.”

Now I know I’m in trouble. “On my knees?” I shouted at her - “I’ll die!” At that moment, I had a sense that this HUGE wave was ready to crash over me yet - at the very same time - it was suspended. I realized that for all its immensity - its distance, like the Angel in front of me, never varied one inch.
I took another breath and got down on my knees with the expectation that the wave would break over my head but at least my friends would be safe. My ego had kicked in now and I was willing to die to save them. It was not until later that I realized that the Angel never said anything about dying.

“What now?” I asked.

At that moment, one of my friends came up to stand between the angel and myself. My friend seemed to be an Angel herself but smaller, younger - my size.

My friend held out one hand and the Angel took it and she held the other out to me. Upon taking her hand, the three of us were linked; it was as if I could feel the older Angel inside of me.

At that moment, my other friend came up to us. As I watched, she began to walk toward me with a small rectangular paper with a cellophane insert covering a cutout. (This was similar to the “magic windows” we would get in the cereal boxes as kids.) All you had to do is look through the cellophane and everything would be revealed.

She held it up and began to look at me through it. I started getting uncomfortable at this point, as I knew she could see my heart. She continued walking around the back of me and I immediately said “No”.

The second friend paused and the Guardian Angel asked why I wanted my friend to stop.
“Because I don’t want her to see.” I responded

“But, if she doesn’t continue you won’t be able to save your friends.” she answered.

“She just can’t,” I said.

Again, she asked me “Why?”

I was silent for a bit and finally I said, “Because she’ll see the blackness. She’ll see the blackness of my soul.” I was crying by this time, ashamed of what I knew. Ashamed of what they would see once she looked in my back where the scar was on my neck.

It was no longer a matter of not trusting those around me: my husband, my family or my friends. I did not trust God. Moreover, that would come out now. Now everyone would know. I said I believed in God. I talked about how wonderful He is in addition to all of the things He would do for you if only you would let him. But I didn’t trust him myself – and that felt black, dirty – it felt like my life was a lie.

I realized that the dream was about trusting God more than I had ever trusted Him before. I knew He would take care of others and in a way I knew he would take care of me. However, there was that “but” in there that, as long as I hung on to it, would keep me from knowing total bliss or freedom.

Epilogue - it has been well over a year since I have had that dream but I still recall the whole thing as vividly as if it had happened yesterday. It is probably because I still struggle with Trust. That that I would do…I do not. I see it more clearly now when I start to be pursued by the waves of fear and doubt but sometimes it still takes God a couple of times asking me to quiet down and “be still”.

Just like in Freedom’s Formula  when we talk about finding our own freedom it’s the ability to get to the root of the issue - shine some light on it - and move forward.

With purpose and an inner freedom in our lives we have energy, we’re filled with sunshine and a spirit of love. It’s easier to be “present” for those around us. We can recognize the miracles that are around us every moment of every day.

Your purpose may be seen in your activities with your family, your church, your community…or even the world. By focusing on what you want in life you will help to create more of it. Mother Theresa would attend a Peace Ralley but never an Anti-War Ralley - she focused on what she believed in.

One of the other points that Mr. Ennever points out in the second Pelmanism book is that having a purpose helps develop your recollective ability and we will look more at this one in the next post.
